Ubuntu 9.10 x64 + NVIDIA Driver (binary)

Instructions:
  • Reset the Xorg to its default conf, and backup the conf
    • sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.original
    • sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
 
    • Installing packages and dependencies
      • sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-`uname -r`
     
      • Remove old version drivers
        • sudo apt-get --purge remove $(dpkg -l | grep nvidia | awk '{print $2}')
       
        • Download the latest driver from nvidia website (I'm using 64-bit)
          • wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/190.53/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-190.53-pkg2.run -O NVIDIA-Linux-190.pkg.run
         
          • Move the installer to /usr/src and link it
            • sudo install NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-190.53-pkg2.run /usr/src/
            • sudo ln -s /usr/src/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-190.53-pkg2.run /usr/src/nvidia-driver
           
            • Stop X. Press "Ctrl+Alt+F1", login and stop gdm
              • sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
             
              • Installing (I choose to let nvidia to reconfigure the conf at the last stage of the installation)
                • sudo sh /usr/src/nvidia-driver
               
                • Restart
                  • sudo reboot
